How do I use the nciku Pinyin Translator?

To use the Pinyin Translator, just enter your sentence in the form above, choose which language you want to translate from and to, and click "Translate":

1. Pinyin is Chinese text written using Latin (English) letters - for example, nihao.
2. Hanzi are Chinese text written using Chinese characters - for example, 你好.
3. The meaning of English should be fairly obvious - an example is hello.

If you're translating text instead of just converting Chinese characters to pinyin, there's a limit of 200 characters, so this tool is for sentences rather than extended blocks of text, but we hope that it will be useful to you.

After translating your text, you can click the "Listen" button to hear the translated sentence.

How does the nciku Pinyin Translator work?

The Pinyin Translator works in two separate stages. To translate between English and Chinese, we use the Youdao Fanyi API. To convert from Chinese to pinyin, the translated output is then sent to nciku's own character-to-pinyin converter to find the appropriate sounds for each word.

There's a certain amount of guesswork involved in both of these stages, so the quality can't match a human translation, but we hope it will be useful for you.
